Delighting Kids: How to Prepare Tasty Street Food at Home

It’s not easy to keep kids away from street food. So, instead of wasting money on the unhygienic food, why not prepare something delicious at home? It is always a classic idea to cook some delicious recipes and surprise your kids with your love.

Homemade food is always healthier and it is a safe option for your growing buds. Street food is extremely delicious, tasty and always tempting but not safe always. Tantalize your taste buds and get in mood with some home cooked yummy street food with the following recipes:

1. Vada Pav:

A common man’s food in Mumbai, Vada Pav is a popular street food across whole of Maharashtra. However, this spicy delight is loved by people all over the world. Here’s how to prepare this dish.


Potatoes, boiled and smashed 250 gm
Garlic 5-6 cloves
Green chillies 4-5
Mustard seeds ½ tsp
Garam Masala ½ tsp
Turmeric ¼ tsp
Curry leaves 4-5
Salt As per taste
Fresh coriander, finely chopped 1 tbsp
Gram flour/ Besan 1 cup
Salt As per taste
Baking soda A pinch
Oil For deep frying


  • Boil potatoes, peel and then mash them with a fork in a bowl. In a small pan, heat 2 to 3 tsp oil. Add cumin seeds and crackle them, then add curry leaves and asafoetida. Stir and saute for about 5 seconds. Add ginger, garlic, and green chili paste and stir. Then, add turmeric, garam masala, potatoes, and salt. Cook for 5 minutes and add coriander. Let it cool for some time and then make lemon sized balls.
  • Till then prepare the batter for covering, mix gram powder, baking soda, salt and make a batter using water. The batter should not be too thin or too thick.
  • Dip the potato balls in the batter and deep fry. Assemble the deep fried Vada in between bread ( or Pav). Serve hot.

2. Pani puri:

The Gol Gappa stalls tantalize the taste buds and make you grab the spicy and sweet delight. Now the lowdown on doing it at home.

For Spicy Chutney:
Mint leaves ½ cup
Ginger ½ inch
Lemon juice 5 tbsp
Coriander leaves 1 cup
Water 5 cups
Salt As per taste
For Tamarind Chutney:
Tamarind ½ cup
Salt As per taste
For Filling
Green moong sprouted and boiled ½ cup
Potatoes, boiled and smashed 1 cup
For Puri:
All-purpose flour 1 cup
Salt As per taste
Water As needed
Oil For deep frying

Procedure: Grind both chutneys separately. Knead flour, salt with water. Make small puris and deep fry. For Pani, stir some Jaljeera powder in water. Assemble Pani puri by filling with organic green moong and potatoes along with tasty chutneys and dip it in the Jaljeera water. You can also buy Puris from the store and make the rest of the stuff from home.

3. Dosa:

A south Indian cuisine, crispy dosas are famous all over India.


Rice, soaked for 8 hrs 3 cups
Urad dal, soaked for 8 hrs 1 cup
Salt As per taste

Procedure: Grind and ferment the contents for overnight. Prepare crisp dosa on the Tava.

4. Chickpea Chat:

This high-protein nutritious organic chat is a quick snack to munch.


Chickpea, boiled 1 cup
Tomatoes, finely chopped ½ cup
Onion, finely chopped ½ cup
Lemon juice 1 tsp
Salt As per taste
Coriander leaves, finely chopped For garnishing

Procedure: Mix all the ingredients and serve with any snack or juice or any cold drink. Buttermilk with organic chat is a wonderful combo.

5. Tikki:

A popular spicy delicious street food which is popular all over the country.


Paneer – smashed and grated ½ cup
Potato-  boiled smashed ½ cup
Green peas, boiled and smashed ½ cup
Garam masala ½ tsp
Lemon juice 1 tsp
Salt As per taste
Oil For shallow fry

Procedure: Mix all the ingredients and make small tikkis and shallow fry.
