Look around you today. Were there really so many overweight people a few decades ago?
When I was a kid, there was that one odd plump kid who stuck out in a class of skinny hands and legs and was promptly called Motu or Fatty. But that’s not the reality today. Children gorging on fast food and fizzy drinks, busy with their smart phones and gaming stations are growing alright. But, horizontally. Fast paced lifestyles do not leave adults the leisure to plan balanced meals or to cook elaborate ones. And the rat race is not good exercise either!
We seem to have now arrived at an age ridden by the problems of plenty where we exercise very little with our limbs and more with thumbs on our smartphones, keyboards or the TV remote.
Organic- the whats and whys
Organic crops are grown with natural fertilisers like manure and compost; pests are controlled using natural methods like birds and naturally derived pesticides like neem oil; weeds are controlled by using hand weeding and crop rotation. Organic products are thus, chemical-free and safe to eat. Organic farming preserves our environment and leaves a clean & green legacy for our children.
We all want to live healthy and fulfilled lives. So, don’t you think it’s time we made a few changes?
This need not be cataclysmic or turn our lives upside down. Small and steady steps can make a big difference .
Breakfast is a must to kickstart your day. It’s a way to make sure that hunger pangs don’t attack you mid-morning and make you reach out for that salt and grease laden samosa or bag of chips or a candy bar. Skipping breakfast is also known to raise blood sugar with a resultant increase in fat storage.Have something healthy like Organic oats Upma or Organic Ragi porridge, both easy to make and tasty to eat. Stay away from fatty hard-to-digest food that makes you feel sluggish even before your day has begun.
Balance your diet and control the portion served
A healthy diet includes whole grains, lean meats, low fat dairy products, fruit and vegetables. How many times have we gorged on that heavy meal and felt lethargic? A healthy diet ensures that your body gets the fuel it needs to manage your energy levels. Use organic products to enhance your diet further.
Start measuring your portions. Lunch could be two organic jowar rotis with a 250 ml bowl of organically grown vegetables or a small bowl of organic brown rice topped with dal. Salads and fruit fill you up well as they are low in calories and high in vitamins. Don’t forget to wash thoroughly before use. Eat safe by using organic farm produce.
Survival of the fittest
Exercise at least 40 minutes a day, 4 days a week. Choose your exercise routine depending on your age and fitness levels.
You can start with a 15 minute walk and diligently increase both the time and the pace, perhaps on a weekly basis. You can join a gym and benefit from the guidance of a professional trainer too. Weights and exercise machines like the cross-trainer could be the exercise of your choice. This isn’t as difficult as it sounds. You can also form a group to exercise with or to do fun outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. Fresh air is an added booster. Exercising can be a social occasion too!
Don’t sit when you can stand or stand when you can walk, or walk when you can run. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk to the market if the road permits it. The point is to keep moving. Regular exercise makes you control body weight, improves the functioning of your organs (particularly your heart and lungs), makes you supple and increases bone strength.
Food for thought?
Endorphins are brain chemicals that are released when you exercise. Some food like flax seeds, avocados and nuts are known to boost endorphins. Endorphins are feel good hormones that relax the body as well as elevate your mood. Roasted flax seeds can be added to soups and salads for added nutrition. Once again, go organic to reap the maximum benefit.
