The benefits of organic foods are widely known and accepted worldwide. Organic foods are a safer and cleaner option as compared to conventionally produced foods, due to the absence of any chemical or synthetic additives and through practices that preserve the environment. Thus it is no surprise that several consumers are opting for organic foods today. But what about spices? Do their organic variants command consumer attention?
The Indian kitchen demands spices as must-have ingredients for various meals. Spices provide a flavoursome addition to meals and lend a dimension to almost any food preparation. Since spices form such an important part of our cuisine, more and more people are now a days demanding organic spices. Take a look at what makes organic spices stand out.
1. Avoids harmful chemicals
As with any conventionally grown food, conventional spices are treated with chemicals and synthetic additives including fertilizers, insecticides and sludge to promote faster growth. These chemicals almost always seep into the soil and are absorbed by the spice plant, thus ultimately making their way onto your plate of food. Organic spices are grown minus the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, genetically modified organisms, sewage sludge or radiation, paving way for safer, healthier ingredients for your food.
2. Stays away from potentially dangerous treatments
Spices are required to be sterilized, so that they can be sold to the market. Conventionally grown spices are typically sterilized either using fumigation or irradiation. Fumigation, the cheapest of the methods, is consequently the most commonly used method to sterilize spices. Fumigation involves allowing ethylene oxide gas to diffuse freely, permeating the spices. Irradiation is less harsh as compared to its counterpart, but it involves using gamma rays or radiation to sterilize the spices. Organic spices, on the other hand, is sterilized using Steaming – using dry stream to destroy bacteria, thus retaining the healthy goodness and flavour of the spices. Therefore, organic spices contain no chemicals or radiation, even post sterilization.
3. Plain old spices or something else?
More often than not, conventionally grown spices may contain amounts of other matter such as flour, salt, sugar and artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. It is almost impossible to identify if these ingredients have been added to your spices or not. Organic spices, however, are devoid of such ‘additives’. Therefore what you see is what you get – pure, safe spices for your cooking.
4. GMOs in spices
Organic spices are the way to go if you want to avoid genetically modified additives in your food. Organic spices are devoid of GMOs or GMO additives, thus making them a much safer alternative to conventional spices.
This is the age of smart shopping and consuming smart food. Organic spices are the way forward in terms of seeking smart, flavourful and safe ingredients for your food preparations. Replacing your conventional spices with organic spices not only ensures safety of ingredients, but also packs the much needed flavour punch that Indian cuisine continuously demands.
